“Wave Cadenza” Captures Mozart’s Creations in Color

Wilwayco reinterprets the musical prodigy’s creations on canvas.

“Wave Cadenza” is another dynamic series of music-inspired abstract paintings by Edwin Wilwayco. In this particular collection, the Nueva Ecija native engages viewers with the compositions of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791).

Wilwayco captures the maestro’s musical theatrics, flourishes, and sound architecture through wavelike movements, layering of curves, counter-curves, asymmetry, and an interplay between bold and vibrant colors. The styles allude to the instruments of the Ancien Regime, Classical, and Rococo Period: the harpsichord, violins, violas, cello, flute, and the fortepiano.

“Wave Cadenza” is a blend of lush and dense arrangements, with soft surfaces in some areas, light elegance in some, and interpretations of operatic sounds in others. Wilwayco’s goal in this group of paintings is to contain that sense of dynamism and rebellion that Mozart espoused: an allusion to the virtuoso’s overall high drama, lively, and clear style.

While appreciated as a traditionalist by contemporary standards, Mozart was revolutionary for his time. He created a wide range of compositions, from entertaining intimate joyful pieces to monumental operatic stage epics that continue to influence the musical and visual arts today.

Wave Cadeza will run until October 22, 2022 at Galerie Joaquin Rockwell, located at R3 Level, Power Plant Mall, Rockwell Center, Makati. For inquiries, contact Galerie Joaquin at +63 915 414 5502 or email galeriejoaquinrockwell@gmail.com
