Absurd and wild as his paintings look, Juanito Torres captures the spirit of current events in his latest solo exhibition.
Art Lounge Manila (ALM) presents “Ready… Get Set… Go!”, the solo exhibition of Juanito Torres, at the 9th edition of Art Fair Philippines. The show features 12 of Torres’ allegorical pieces alluding to the forthcoming May elections, and the carnivalesque nature of the spectacles which mark the Presidential race. With works that are pointed, thought-provoking and at times, humorous, the Torres exhibition is sure to move people to question how they can love the Philippines at this crucial point in time.
ALM has previously showcased Juanito Torres’ works titled “Quest for Freedom” in a show last June 2021. The paintings featured in the exhibition were based on historical events, like the Sumuroy Rebellion, the execution of Rizal and World War II scenes interspersed with coded symbols that cast a critical eye on both the past and present. “Quest for Freedom” juxtaposes the traditional understanding of heroism, exemplified by history and against the difficulty of understanding how this plays out in a situation where Philippine sovereignty, nationalism, love for country, and love for the Filipino way of life are threatened both from within and without.
“Ready… Get Set… Go! : The Solo Exhibition of Juanito Torres” for Art Fair Philippines 2022’s Ten Days of Art initiative is still up for public viewing at The Gallery, located at the 2nd and 3rd levels of Greenbelt 5 Mall in Makati City, until April 1, 2022.
