The animated series is getting some big names for the lead.
Since Netflix announced that it would be making an animated series out of the cult comic book, Trese, the upcoming show has become one of the most highly anticipated events in the Philippine comics scene. And for good reason: it’s a much acclaimed local title, earning several awards and even receiving a US release.
Created by Budjette Tan and KaJO Baldisimo, the graphic novel follows Alexandra Trese as she navigates the world of supernatural crime. It’s set in a Philippines where beings from local folklore lurk in the background, running kidnapping rings and generally ruling over the underworld.

And now, with the announcement of who’s voicing the lead role for the show, there’s more big news. Netflix is bringing out the big guns: signing on Filipino-Canadian actress Shay Mitchell (YOU, Pretty Little Liars) and Filipino actress Liza Soberano (My Ex and Whys, Alone/Together) to play Alexandra in the English and Filipino versions.

Jay Oliva (Wonder Woman, The Legend of Korra), who is the executive producer for the series, says that he knew it would be difficult to cast the lead role for this particular show. Everything, of course, hinged on getting Alexandra’s voice right.

“Shay’s Alexandra exceeded my expectations and she delivers a performance of strength, determination and family duty that is at the very core of the character. If that wasn’t enough, imagine my delight when we confirmed Liza Soberano joining the Filipino voice cast! I am a big fan of hers and she fits the character so well. Having Liza play Alexandra Trese for the series makes this project even more special to me and my team!”
Trese is set to be released on Netflix this year. Meanwhile, you can start hitting the books to get up to speed.
