By the Glass: Irish Coffee

Most people prefer to start their day of with a cup of coffee. Me, I prefer a grande iced green tea to start the day. And then, if I have a heavy dinner, my go-to drink after the meal is always a nice, hot cup of Irish coffee.

No, it’s not coffee that comes from Ireland. I’m talking about the cocktail. And I only recently found that Irish coffee isn’t the only cocktail the Irish are known for. There’s even an Irish Winter and an Irish Sour!

The Classic Irish Coffee

The drink was created in the 1940s by chef Joe Sheridan in Limerick, Ireland. It grew in popularity during the early 1950s and was known as the go-to airport drink.

The drink is fairly simple to assemble. It takes hot coffee, Irish whiskey, and brown sugar topped off with fresh cream, though an easier option would be whipped cream. There’s nothing fancy about it, unless you want to add your own flair like adding caramelized brown sugar around the rim of the glass.

It makes for a good nightcap too, which is why I like it after dinner. Everyone else can have their wine.
