Just a year after their debut, IWC Schaffhausen’s motorsport team has taken the Tony Gaze trophy.
At the Goodwood Members’ Meeting last week, former Formula One superstar David Coulthard sat behind the wheel of a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL “Gullwing”—which takes its nickname from the doors hinged at the roof, resembling the wings of a seagull—to win the top prize at the meet.
The Tony Gaze Trophy is a competition for sports and GT cars that raced between 1954 to 1959, making it both a display of skill and a spectacle of classic, historical cars.
Also on display was the antique fighter plane, the Silver Spitfire, which IWC is supporting in its bid to make a new world record by flying across the world.
Coulthard, who is a 13-time Grand Prix winner, once described the Gullwing as his “favorite car from the past,” and it seems fitting for him to pilot one of Mercedes-Benz’s most iconic vehicles around Goodwood’s famously challenging track.
