Why Watches Matter

In a world where everything’s gone digital, why own a mechanical watch?

Between maps, health monitors, and music libraries, there isn’t a lot that a smart watch can’t do. There’s really only so much wrist space, and if you want to be practical about things, going digital seems to make sense.

So why even own a mechanical watch? Why get a timepiece that does little more than tell the time instead of one that has apps and syncs with your phone into the bargain?

The answer lies not so much in what you gain, but in what you lose. And what you lose is the artistry, the history of watchmaking. The soul of a tradition that’s survived for close to 500 years.

Listen to Patek Philippe’s Deepa Chatrath as she talks about why mechanical watches matter and why they remain highly sought-after.
