Because his voice totally deserves a podcast.
David Tennant Does a Podcast With…is as straightforward an experience as you can get with a podcast. Conversational talk show format, no fancy bells and whistles aside from the obligatory intro and extro jingles. It’s very homey, very casual, nothing too elaborate. It’s just a guy chatting with a friend.
Except it’s not just any guy, is it? It’s David Tennant. All that simplicity does is amplify just how appealing he is as a personality, and not in any garish way. Letting him be the affable chum next door is all the star delivery the podcast needs to be worth a listen, whether you’re a fan of him or his guests.
I spent an hour-long car ride listening to his recently released first episode, where Tennant essentially just hung out with his Broadchurch co-star, Olivia Colman. They talked about her career, the choices she’s made, the challenges she’s faced, and it all comes out like two good friends catching up over tea.
There was an intensely likable warmth and unguardedness about it all, and it was easy to fantasize about being right there with them, just politely listening and waiting for the moment when Tennant would ask me, “and what about you, what do you think of all this?”
It’s not a hardcore journalistic interview by any means, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes we just need to have pleasant, relaxing moments listening to familiar voices talking about random things. You know, like friends do, even if those two friends happen to be extremely famous people.
I’m usually dizzy in car rides, but by the time I got to my destination I was perfectly fine. Complete with a warm, fuzzy feeling. Should you need more of that feeling in your life too, now you know where to get it in fresh podcast form if you’re enamored with the voice of one of the most recognizable Scotsmen in the world.
